Okay, so now you are familiar with Steam, you’ve installed FSX: Steam Edition, you’ve whizzed around a few airports, and flown a few missions. Customization, of course! This guide is the first part of a series of tutorials on how to customize your FSX: Steam Edition experience using add-ons. You will learn what add-ons are, and how to install them in FSX: Steam Edition. What are add-ons? One of the many reasons Microsoft’s Flight Simulator series, especially FSX, is so successful is because you can build on the core software to create your own custom aviation experience using add-ons. An add-on (referred to as “DLC” on Steam) is a piece of software which expands on a core game such as FSX.
Add-ons are not essential in order to play FSX: Steam Edition, but they do expand the scope of what is possible. Add-ons can be combined in different ways to customize and expand your FSX: Steam Edition experience, and can include additional missions and flight plans, aircraft, airports, scenery and textures, and weather engines. For example, if you like to plan flights to exotic locations, Mission Aware Technologies’ add-on builds on the existing in-game region with features such as improved airports and more advanced land and water textures, as well as some fun features like AI water traffic and even an aircraft carrier you can land on! If you prefer a colder climate, FSDG have developed a fabulous airport/scenery add-on focused around airport. This means that Friday Harbor is installed on your computer and you’re ready to explore! Start FSX: Steam Edition by clicking the blue play button, and FSX: Steam Edition will start. Before you take to the skies, it is worth making sure your new add-on is correctly prioritized.
Once you fire up FSX: Steam Edition, click “Settings”, then click on the “Scenery Library” button as illustrated below: Use the “Move up” and “Move down” buttons to prioritize your scenery. It is advised you only put a checkmark next to scenery you plan to use in your current session. This will reduce loading time and maximize performance in-game. Once you have prioritized your scenery, it’s time to explore your new add-on content. Click “Ok” and return to the “Free Flight” section of the menu. Choose your desired aircraft and weather, then click “Fly Now!” Congratulations! You have bought and used your first FSX: Steam Edition add-on!.

December 5, 2016 at 11:05 am Hi John, When we released FSX:SE, we worked extensively with third party developers to make sure that the majority of the add-ons for boxed FSX work in FSX: Steam Edition, however as there are literally thousands of freeware and payware add-ons, we couldn’t go through and test every single one! The developers of your add-ons will know if they are compatible with FSX:SE. It is worth visiting their websites to make sure. Adding Scenery to FSX 1st we assume you know how to download and unzip files but we will go through this. Windows 7 users see For this we will take the example of Scenery LFLV Vichy Charmeil found 1. It is best in the long run to create a folder on your PC (probably on your 'C' Drive) specifically for FS downloads. I am calling mine 'FS Downloads' 2. Download the scenery file into your FS downloads folder 3.
Using an unzip client such as, unzip the file into the same folder. (right click - 'extract to.' Using Windows Explorer open both your Flight Simulator X directory and your FS Downloads directory - resize to view side by side. Move the scenery file containing the sub folders 'Scenery/Texture' into the 'Addon Scenery' directory in FSX. Now activate the scenery in FSX. Start FSX -. Go to World - Scenery Library -.
Click 'Add Area'. Select the new scenery from the 'Addon Scenery' folder. If you have selected the correct directory, the 'Directory' field will contain the name. In this case it reads 'Scenery addon scenery LFLV - Vichy Charmeil'.
